What are the requirements to become a Puppy Carer?
Puppy Caring......
It's very rewarding being a volunteeer puppy carer for a Seeing Eye Dog.... that's why so many of our puppy carers have cared for as many as 3,4 or 5 pups already.
Knowing that a pup you helped train is working with someone who is blind or vision impaired is indescribable and your dedication to Seeing Eye Dogs Australia has helped change the life of a Australian in need.
What you need to know......
One main handler: The puppy should have one adult carer (the nominated handler) who is responsible for all aspects of the puppy’s care, socialisation and training. Dedicated contact: The puppy must be with the Carer for most of the day. Not to be left alone for more than 2 hours at a timeSecure yard: The carer should have a yard with secure fencing that is free from hazards such as sharp surfaces and toxic plantsInside Dogs: Seeing Eye puppies must sleep inside, be relaxed and calmly behaved indoorsLocation: The Carer should live within an hour of the Melbourne CBD, within the Brisbane and Sunshine Coast areas and Western Perth to Freemantle corridorAvailability: The Carer should be available for visits from a puppy supervisor during the week in business hours (we can come to your work place if you work full time) and on the 1st Saturday of each month for training days.
Socialisation: Carers must be able to provide regular socialisation experiences for the puppy as directed. These should include travelling in cars and on public transport, exposure to traffic, shops, people and animals. Walking in city and country/suburban areasTraining: Carers must provide firm consistent training for their puppy under the direction of their supervisor. The puppy is a working dog and should be treated as such. There are specific rules to follow and these must be adhered to strictly, this will not only help the dog but make the experience more enjoyable for the carer as well.
